All Things Live Oak will be a one day program on… Live oak trees! In collaboratoin with Georgia Urban Forest Council (GUFC) and Trees South Carolina (TSC) this program will be informative and inspirational. UGA’s Dr. Kim Coder will be the key speaker. Other tree experts and a tour of Savannah’s most important Live oaks will be included.

CEUs will be available for ISA, ASLA and SAF. Check back for more details. This program will be a GUFC and TSC quarterly program.

Georgia Arbor Day, Saturday 10 a.m. Bicycle Ride with SBC

Savannah Tree Foundation is celebrating Georgia Arbor Day with a bike ride past many of the STF urban forestry sites. Join STF members, friends and the Savannah Bicycle Campaign urban riding experts on a pleasant Saturday morning ride. Start in Daffin Park by the Leisure Services office, next to the playgrounds, at 10:00 a.m. and pedal past tree planting sites on the Hospital Access Road, in Magnolia Park and at Savannah State. Learn the best, safest and shadiest routes to navigate around town on your bicycle. See the route we’ll ride here.

Join Members and Friends of the Savannah Tree Foundation to plant additional trees at the River’s End Campground. 25 volunteers are needed to help with planting trees, and mulching previously planted trees. Celebrate the holiday weekend by volunteering with Savannah Tree Foundation. Saturday morning, January 14th. 10 a.m. to noon, rain or shine! Community Service credit and refreshments provided.

Mark your calendar for this second Saturday ForestKeeper workday, on Saturday, November 12th, 2011. Time 9 a.m. at Westlake. Twenty five volunteers are needed to help members of the Savannah Tree Foundation commemorate Veteran’s Day by planting trees, and caring for trees planted in January. Come see how the forest has grown!

Please wear closed toe shoes, long pants and long sleeves to protect from the sun and bugs. Bring gloves if you have them. Tools, gloves, COMMUNITY SERVICE CREDIT and refreshments provided by Savannah Tree Foundation.

National Public Lands Day, September 24th

Please plan to join the Savannah Tree Foundation on Saturday morning, September 24th to celebrate National Public Lands Day. Time 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., at Westlake. This urban reforestation project needs many helping hands to clear weeds the natural way. Bring gloves, hard tined rake and/or clippers if you have them.

Please wear closed toe shoes, and wear long pants and sleeves to protect from the sun and bugs.

Community Service Credit and Refreshments provided.

Directions: Go West on Victory Drive. Turn LEFT onto Ogeechee Road/ HWY 17S. Turn LEFT onto Liberty Parkway and proceed straight at Mills B. Lane and Staley Ave intersections. Turn LEFT onto Westlake Ave. Look for parking along Westlake and Oriole Road.

Drought: Tree Watering Tips

From UGA Chatham County Extension Agent David Linville:

We are in a serious drought. I have not had a drop of rain at my house in 6 weeks. I know some places got an inch or 2 a few days ago. I am getting phone calls about the leaves of trees and shrubs yellowing up and then dropping. This is a survival mechanism of the plants when they are without water. If this drought continues, I am afraid we are going to see a lot of dead trees and ornamentals next spring. Weakened trees and shrubs are also susceptible to beetle and bore damage. The plants no longer have the strength to protect themselves.

Tip #1. DO NOT FERTILIZE! Many people then put down fertilizer to help the plant and this is absolutely the wrong procedure. Fertilizer forces plants to grow which means the plant needs even more water.

Tip #2. I do not have an irrigation system but I am strongly suggesting you water your trees. Hook up the water sprinkler to your garden hose. I place the garden hose about 15 feet (give or take some) away from the tree and I let it water for 4 hours in a complete circle. You need to do a deep watering. This is not the time to be worried about your water bill. Taking down a dead tree can cost way over one thousand dollars. You want to put out more than one inch of water. Remember a 100 foot tall tree will send out roots 4-5 hundred feet from the trunk. A mature oak tree will use more than a thousand gallons of water on a hot day. Water your trees right or don’t water at all.
