All Things Live Oak

All Things Live Oak will be a one day program on… Live oak trees! In collaboratoin with Georgia Urban Forest Council (GUFC) and Trees South Carolina (TSC) this program will be informative and inspirational. UGA’s Dr. Kim Coder will be the key speaker. Other tree experts and a tour of Savannah’s most important Live oaks will be included.

This program will be a GUFC and TSC quarterly program and has been approved for 5 ISA Arborist CEUs and 4.5 Society of American Foresters CEUs. 2 GBCI & AIA credits. Georgia landscape architects will be provided with a Professional Development Certificate. Download the program agenda here.

Georgia Arbor Day, Saturday 10 a.m. Bicycle Ride with SBC

Savannah Tree Foundation is celebrating Georgia Arbor Day with a bike ride past many of the STF urban forestry sites. Join STF members, friends and the Savannah Bicycle Campaign urban riding experts on a pleasant Saturday morning ride.  Start in Daffin Park by the Leisure Services office, next to the playgrounds, at 10:00 a.m. and pedal past tree planting sites on the Hospital Access Road, in Magnolia Park and at Savannah State. Learn the best,  safest and shadiest routes to navigate around town on your bicycle. The route is approximately 10 miles. Riders should wear a helmet.   See the route we’ll ride here.

Be Patriotic, Plant and Care for Trees on November 12, 2011

Mark your calendar for this second Saturday ForestKeeper workday, on Saturday, November 12th, 2011. Time 9 a.m. at Westlake. Twenty five volunteers are needed to help members of the Savannah Tree Foundation commemorate Veteran’s Day by planting trees, and caring for trees planted in January. Come see how the forest has grown!

Please wear closed toe shoes, long pants and long sleeves to protect from the sun and bugs. Bring gloves if you have them. Tools, gloves, COMMUNITY SERVICE CREDIT and refreshments provided by Savannah Tree Foundation.

National Public Lands Day, September 24th

Please plan to join the Savannah Tree Foundation on Saturday morning, September 24th to celebrate National Public Lands Day. Time 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., at Westlake. This urban reforestation project needs many helping hands to clear weeds the natural way. Bring gloves, hard tined rake and/or clippers if you have them.

Please wear closed toe shoes, and wear long pants and sleeves to protect from the sun and bugs.

Community Service Credit and Refreshments provided.

Directions: Go West on Victory Drive. Turn LEFT onto Ogeechee Road/ HWY 17S. Turn LEFT onto Liberty Parkway and proceed straight at Mills B. Lane and Staley Ave intersections. Turn LEFT onto Westlake Ave. Look for parking along Westlake and Oriole Road.

Help Savannah Tree Foundation mulch and prune trees along Shorty Cooper Drive at the entrance to Bacon Park Golf Course.  Planted in November 2004, STF volunteers will return to this planting site to get these trees ready for the next 10 years of growth! Join us at 9am.

Volunteers are needed to help weed and mulch trees planted in February 2010 by the Savannah Tree Foundation at one of the County’s reforestation areas.  Volunteers will learn the correct way to mulch trees, and will help prepare these young trees for Savannah’s hot summer.

The Savannah Tree Foundation regularly helps beautify public parks and open spaces across Chatham County through its community volunteer tree planting, assessing and maintenance program, Forestkeeper 2nd Saturdays.

 Volunteers are provided with site specific training, knowledgeable team leaders, and the tools needed to help take care of our urban forests.  It’s a fun, free activity that helps you to help our environment.

 Refreshments and community service hours are provided.  Please bring  hard-tined rakes or pitchforks if possible. Wear closed toe shoes and long sleeves and pants to protect from the sun and bugs.

Directions to Westlake: TAKE VICTORY DRIVE WEST OF BULL ST. , GO LEFT ON TO OGEECHEE ROAD/ HWY 17, GO LEFT ON LIBERTY PARKWAY,  GO STRAIGHT THROUGH LIGHT AT MILLS B LANE BLVD., GO STRAIGHT THROUGH STOP AT STALEY AVE.

TURN LEFT ON WESTLAKE AVE. , PROCEED ALL THE WAY DOWN THE STREET & PARK ON END OF WESTLAKE AVE. OR GO RIGHT ON ORIOLE ROAD TO PARK.  LOOK FOR SIGNS!
