Did you know STF is the oldest urban & community forestry nonprofit organization in the State of Georgia? As the oldest, we’ve got a lot to brag about! We were first in the nation to:
- Use satellite imagery to document tree canopy changes in an urban area
- Protect a single tree—The Candler Oak—through a conservation easement
- Introduce the “Project Learning Tree” curriculum into Georgia schools
- Produce a State of the Trees Report to guide municipal urban forestry policy
- Develop an urban forest component in a countywide disaster management plan, which later served as a model for the USDA Forest Service
Savannah Tree Foundation has received the following awards and commendations:
- National Arbor Day Foundation’s Arbor Day Awards- Project Award for innovative use of satellite technology to further sound stewardship of the city’s community forest, awarded April 25, 1995
- The Home Depot Foundation’s NeighborWoods Award, given in partnership with the Alliance for Community Trees, for building healthy and sustainable communities, 2007
- 1990 Outstanding Civic Organization, Georgia Urban Forest Council
- 2000 Outstanding Annual Conference Host, Georgia Urban Forest Council
- Proclamation in Honor of the Savannah Tree Foundation from the City of Tybee Island, 27 March 2003, by Mayor Walter W. Parker
- City of Savannah Resolution commending the Savannah Tree Foundation for undertaking a partnership to restore tree canopy along White Bluff Road on February 4, 1993 by the Honorable Susan S. Weiner, Mayor
- County of Chatham Resolution commending Savannah Tree Foundation for work on Chatham County Soccer Complex, 22 February 2002 by Dr. Billy B. Hair, Chairman
- National Association of County Agricultural Agents certificate of appreciation
- Bacon Park Neighborhood Association award in recognition of the Savannah Tree Foundation, for the Preservation of Bacon Park Forest, 2006
